Homework/Homework Folder
Homework will not start right away. The month of September is generally a time to become familiar with the daily classroom routines and a time for me to assess students’ abilities. We do a lot of Kindergarten skill review and I will be sending home Family Times, which is an additional home link from the reading program. It provides some fun ways to help your child review and learn, it is not homework or mandatory.
A packet will be sent home on Monday for your child to do throughout the week, rather than sending homework home daily. I have found that parents prefer this because things come up such as appointments, obligations, sporting events, and etc. This way you can decide what nights work best week to week to do homework. The packet includes the following:
1) “Family Times”- This paper lets you know which skills I will be teaching for the week. It has some suggested home activities that will reinforce these skills.
2) Math Worksheets – We use the Everyday Math Curriculum as the core math instruction. These worksheets will focus on skills I feel the class needs further practice with. The math sheets will be dated with the day I will be teaching that lesson. Please do not have your child do the math homework before the date on the sheet because I will not have taught that lesson yet. Prior to beginning a new Math unit the Everyday Math Curriculum has a home letter that is sent explaining the new skills that will be introduced.
3) Spelling Words – Students will be introduced to these words each Monday. Spelling words will be practiced throughout the week and we will have a test each Friday. The spelling words are consistent with the skills taught that week.
Please keep the packet stapled together and return it on Friday.
Any extra time you have each night should be spent reading with your child. Allow your child to choose a book they enjoy and are able to read with very little assistance and have them read it to you. Practice allows for your child to become a more confident, fluent, and successful reader!
